Great documentaries made in a millennial's lifetime
(1985 - present)
Here at Yarn HQ we love documentaries. The artform has exploded in my lifetime (40 years) with the widespread availability of affordable digital cameras and editing software, easy access to archival and found footage and the advent of new distribution methods. I was 15 in 2001 when I saw the skateboarding documentary; Dogtown and Z-Boys. The film blew my mind. I realised a documentary could be as exciting and as slick as any feature film. I was hooked ever since.
What follows is a personal list of my favourite documentaries, made in my lifetime. I’ve grouped them by theme for my own amusement but also with the idea that someday we may make this list into a podcast series, each episode will focus on a theme. (If you really want to see this happen please reach out to me and let me know)
I’ve also given each documentary a personal star rating of 1-3, again just for my own amusement. In my opinion every title on this list is worth a watch.
This is an ever evolving list and will be added to so suggestions are always welcome.
Happy watching

Difficult film productions
Movie sets are high pressure environments. When things go wrong they can spiral out of control. The Director’s vision can dwarf the budget, studio executives can meddle, actors can make ridiculous demands, or the Philipine’s military can keep flying your helicopters out of shot to fight a local rebellion. Most of the productions at the heart of these documentaries were doomed but the record of making them is often so entertaining that no one can say the filmmakers' efforts were totally in vain.

Reenactment As Narrative Device
Reenactment has always been a technique available to documentary filmmakers but these films use reenactment not just to illustrate or imagine something, they use reenactment as a narrative device. They lean into the inherent fakeness of recreation to uncover a truth and the people reenacting the story become the story themselves. "This Is Not a Film" (2011) redefines cinematic boundaries through a raw, self-reflexive portrayal of life under artistic censorship in Iran. "The Act of Killing" (2012) confronts its subjects with reenactments of their own violent pasts, creating an unsettling yet profound exploration of morality and memory. "Chasing Shackleton" (2014) combines historical and modern reenactments to immerse viewers in an epic tale of endurance and leadership. "The Rehearsal" (2022) pushes the limits of performative storytelling by examining human interactions through meticulously staged scenarios, while "Reality" (2023) employs reenactment to transform real-life events into a compelling visual and emotional experience. These documentaries showcase how reenactments can serve as powerful tools for reflecting on truth, identity, and the nature of storytelling itself.

Stranger than fiction thrillers
These filmmakers often employ storytelling techniques that blur the line between fact and interpretation, drawing viewers into narratives that are as compelling as they are carefully crafted. Filmmakers use subtle (and sometimes overt) manipulation to steer emotions, build suspense, and enhance the impact of the revelations. For example, "Three Identical Strangers" (2018) unfolds like a mystery, presenting information in a deliberate sequence to create shock and intrigue while holding back crucial details until the perfect moment.
"Searching for Sugar Man" (2012) shapes its narrative to amplify the mythic aura surrounding its subject, omitting certain facts to preserve the story's dramatic arc. "Tickled" (2016) starts lighthearted but quickly spirals into darker territory, using the filmmaker's own reactions and staged confrontations to heighten the tension. Even "Blackfish" (2013), while incredibly powerful, has been criticized for presenting a one-sided perspective, weaving its message with emotionally charged imagery and testimony.
These techniques are not inherently deceitful, but they reflect the filmmakers' desire to immerse the audience and evoke strong reactions, often making the narrative feel larger than life. This manipulation of the story’s construction adds a layer of intrigue, leaving the audience questioning not just the events themselves, but how they are framed for consumption.
